One could say Mandalay is full of superlatives. World's largest book, the largest bell, the longest wooden bridge, craziest golden clad temples and the most unique pagodas. However, there are some contradictory claims on Mandalay. But many of those who have visited here, Mandalay is a fascinating city with some surreal sights and that certainly makes Mandalay more than just a stopover destination to Yangon.
Mandalay is the second-largest city in Myanmar and was established in 1857. It lies on the east bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River and in the upper part of Myanmar. Mandalay has the Royal Palace of the last Konbaung Dynasty. The city is the economic and religious focus of upper Myanmar and is centred around the Royal Palace. Mandalay inherits much of their cultural heritage from the ancient Myanmar Kingdoms that has created beautiful some places to visit.
Here you can climb up Mandalay Hill which is a 236-meter-high mountain in the north of the city. From the top, you have a great view over the entire city and the surrounding area, but the ascent to the summit itself are real highlights in and of itself. On the way to the top, you'll be passing by some cute souvenir shops, buddha statues, and a fantastic romantic photo backdrops where you can have your picture taken. This visit is definitely worthwhile.
Pagodas can be seen everywhere you walk in Mandalay. But none more important than Mahamuni Pagoda. It is not only the religious centre of Mandalay, but it’s also home to the holiest Buddha statue in Myanmar. Every day, countless pilgrims flock to the pagoda to plaster the Buddha with golden leaves. The atmosphere here is just different compared to the other pagodas and you’ll immediately notice that the Buddha statue is something very special for the people of Mandalay.
We would also recommend other destinations in the surrounding area such as Monywa, Pyin U Lwin, Mingun, Amarapura, Inwa, Sagaing.
