During the 70s, Bintulu was only a small fishing village with a small population of 14,000. Today, Bintulu's booming industrial industry increased its population to more than 210,000 people. Although their oil and gas industry takes all the plaudits, Bintulu's tourist attraction is no slouch when it comes to its natural beauty.

Jungle trekking at Similajau National Park is a perfect introduction to Bintulu's rich greenery. With an abundance of nature trails to hike, you can pick and choose the paths for you to explore this vast park. If you plan to take a hike to Golden Beach by the coast stretching for 25 miles, you can stay on the Main Trail with red markings along the way. For those who are into doing something more extra, you can try the trails that go past the mangrove. For some historical adventure, feel as if you're Indiana Jones as you navigate through a 40,000-year-old cave at Gua Niah. The trek to Gua Niah is relatively easy as wide walkways have been created for visitors. To reach the cave, you will have to start from Niah National Park and walk 4.5km through the jungle. You can even feel like a local when you stay inside the traditional indigenous longhouse. The locals here now even offer homestays for you to stay in as you feel like a local Sarawakian as soon as you enter the house.

Bintulu's local street food is also something you need to experience. Must-try meals would include barbequed chicken wings, satay (barbecued meat on skewers), 'pisang goreng' (banana fritters) and other seafood dishes – especially when Bintulu is a seaside city. You can also find full-on meals such as plates of noodles and rice are also available from some stalls. To end your meal, have some Ais Cendol (shaved ice with coconut milk, palm sugar, and assorted toppings) or Ais Campur (beverage comprised mainly of coconut milk, syrup, and assorted jelly) as a refreshing dessert!
